Herford: The Doe and the Lion

A Doe, pursued by dogs, to save
Her life took refuge in a cave.
Picture her consternation when
It proved to be a Lion's den,
And her unspeakable dismay
To find it was the Lion's day
"At home." He hailed her with delight.
"My dear," said he, "you are a sight
For hungry eyes!" " Alas!" cried she,
"That this should be the end of me!
Only escaping Man's pursuit
To be devoured by a Brute!"
