Boothby: The Faithful Dog

Officious gifts may fools surprise,
But raise suspicion in the wise.
A night-thief, passing in the street,
To a House-dog presented meat.
"If this to hold my tongue you offer,"
Says Sultan, "know I scorn your proffer;
The bribes and flatt'ries of a stranger,
But warn me more to watch the danger."
