The Dogs and the Hide

The Dogs and the Hide. Some dogs saw a leather hide submerged in the river. In order to quickly snatch it from the river, they began to drink the water. They exploded and died before they were able to reach what they wanted.

Canes et Corium. Corium depressum in flumine viderunt Canes. Quod, ut extrahere celeriter potuissent, aquam coeperunt lambere. Sic rupti, pereunt priusquam quod petierant contingere valuissent.

Notes. This is Ademar 2, which is Perry 135 in Perry's classification scheme. In other versions of this fable, it is greedy wolves who drink the water to try to get the submerged hide.
